Agios Bessetere Mystery Deepens as Police Remain Silent on Investigation

More than a year after the Sierra Leone authorities intercepted the Agios Bessetere vessel off the coast of Sierra Leone, questions are mounting over the status of the investigation, with the Sierra Leone Police yet to publicly explain whether the case has been concluded, whether anyone was charged, or what became of the four crew members reportedly arrested aboard the vessel.

The vessel was intercepted on July 22, 2025, at approximately 10:30 a.m., following concerns raised by local residents that it could be linked to suspected drug trafficking. The concerns reportedly prompted a joint operation involving the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces Navy Wing and the Sierra Leone Police Maritime Unit.

Yet, despite the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the vessel and the subsequent arrest of four crew members, the public has received little information about the outcome of the investigation.

The silence has become more significant following a fresh report linking the Agios Bessetere to a wider account of suspicious maritime activity along Sierra Leone’s coastline.

According to a recent report published by Economist Press, a blue trawler ran aground halfway between Freetown and the Tokeh area, near the village of Hamilton. The report described the vessel as having become stranded after an apparent nighttime incident while local fishermen were at sea.

A fisherman interviewed for the report alleged that the vessel contained four white men, packages and large quantities of foreign currency when local residents entered the boat after hearing its engine.

The report further alleged that soldiers subsequently arrived, escorted the men away and removed packages and cash from the vessel.

However, these allegations remain claims attributed to the report and have not been independently established by Voice of Salone.

At the time, a government statement reportedly said that “nothing of police interest or security concern” had been discovered.

That explanation, however, has not put an end to questions surrounding the vessel.

Weeks later, according to the report, a crane was brought in to try to move the stranded vessel back into the sea, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Nearly a year later, the Agios reportedly remains stranded on the shoreline, continuing to attract the attention of local residents.

The unresolved circumstances surrounding the vessel raise a fundamental question: What happened to the investigation?

If four crew members were arrested, were they released, prosecuted or formally charged?

If the investigation was concluded, what were its findings?

Were the vessel, its cargo and the circumstances of its interception subjected to a comprehensive forensic and maritime investigation?

And if authorities determined that there was no criminal or security concern, why has the public not been given a detailed account of how that conclusion was reached?

These questions become particularly important in light of Sierra Leone’s position along a major maritime corridor in West Africa, where authorities have repeatedly expressed concern about transnational organised crime and drug trafficking.

The issue is not simply about one stranded vessel.

It is about public accountability, the handling of potentially sensitive maritime interceptions and the transparency of investigations involving alleged international criminal activity.

Despite repeated questions from the press, the Sierra Leone Police has yet to publicly provide a comprehensive update on the Agios Bessetere investigation or clarify whether the matter was ever taken before the courts.

The continued silence leaves a troubling information gap.

For a vessel that reportedly triggered a joint military and police response, resulted in the arrest of four crew members and generated allegations of suspicious cargo and foreign currency, the absence of a clear public conclusion has inevitably fuelled speculation.
