ECOWAS DIPLOMATS FORM PEACE COMMITTEE TO SUPPORT SIERRA LEONE’S NATIONAL COHESION

ECOWAS diplomatic representatives in Sierra Leone have pledged to strengthen regional support for the country’s peacebuilding efforts following discussions with former President Ernest Bai Koroma in Freetown.

At a meeting held on 2 November 2026, representatives from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Guinea and The Gambia agreed to establish a collaborative committee to support the implementation of the Agreement for National Unity (ANU) and the Tripartite Agreement.

Former President Koroma called for practical measures to sustain national reconciliation, rebuild political trust and prevent tensions during future elections. He also urged ECOWAS to strengthen existing peacebuilding frameworks rather than establish parallel structures.

The former President reaffirmed his willingness to support President Julius Maada Bio’s peace initiative, while the diplomatic representatives commended his statesmanship and commitment to national unity.

ECOWAS Resident Representative, Ambassador John Azumah, welcomed the proposals and confirmed the diplomats’ decision to work collectively in support of Sierra Leone’s peace and national cohesion agenda.

The engagement underscores ECOWAS-Cedeao’s continued commitment to promoting stability, political cooperation and lasting peace in Sierra Leone.
