Ministers responsible for youth, sports and development across ECOWAS Member States have called for stronger regional collaboration, increased youth involvement in governance and peacebuilding, and sustainable funding to advance the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Agenda in West Africa.

The call was made during a two-day ministerial consultation held in Accra, Ghana, from 27 to 28 October 2026, under the theme: “Advancing Youth, Peace and Security in West Africa: Strengthening Regional Cooperation, Knowledge Sharing and Strategic Partnerships.”

During the meeting, Ministers stressed the importance of improving coordination among Member States, strengthening strategic partnerships and mobilising adequate financial resources to ensure the effective implementation of the regional Youth, Peace and Security Agenda.

They also highlighted the need for governments to prioritise youth-focused initiatives through dedicated national budgetary allocations, ensuring that commitments translate into tangible programmes and meaningful opportunities for young people.

The consultation further underscored the importance of recognising young people as active partners in promoting peace, preventing conflicts and strengthening democratic governance across the region.

The Ministers called for a coordinated regional approach that empowers young people, promotes knowledge exchange and builds sustainable partnerships to address emerging security challenges and advance lasting peace and stability in West Africa.
