Liberia’s $19 Million Cocaine Seizure Renews Focus on Sierra Leone Drug Trafficking Concerns
A major cocaine seizure in Liberia valued at approximately US$19 million has reignited regional concerns about transnational drug trafficking networks and alleged links between Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to an investigation published by journalist Rodney Sieh of FrontPage Africa, Liberian authorities intercepted 237.6 kilograms of cocaine concealed in cargo destined for Europe through Roberts International Airport. The discovery has prompted an extensive investigation involving airport authorities, security agencies, and international partners.
The report highlights growing concerns among regional and international observers over allegations that convicted Dutch drug trafficker Jos Leijdekkers, reportedly residing in Sierra Leone under the alias Omar Sheriff, may be connected to criminal networks operating across West Africa. European authorities have long sought his extradition and continue to monitor activities linked to narcotics trafficking in the region.
Investigators are examining possible cross-border drug routes between Sierra Leone and Liberia, particularly through key land crossings, amid claims that both countries are increasingly being used as transit points for international narcotics operations.
The seizure has intensified pressure on the Liberian government to conduct a transparent and independent investigation into the sophisticated network believed to be behind the shipment. Security experts argue that an operation of such scale could not have occurred without the involvement of well-organized criminal structures and possible support from individuals within key institutions.
Liberian Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh has described the case as a serious national security threat, confirming that a joint security investigation has been launched. The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has also indicated that the operation may be linked to wider international organized crime networks.
The case has renewed calls for stronger regional cooperation, enhanced border security, and decisive action against drug trafficking syndicates operating across West Africa. Observers warn that the growing influence of transnational drug networks poses a significant threat to governance, security, and stability throughout the region.
