Parliament Signals Support For Former President Koroma’s Return To SierraLeone
Parliament on Thursday considered a motion following the Attorney General and Minister of Justice’s decision to discontinue the treason charges previously filed against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.
Moving the motion, the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, said the decision was guided by the national interest and formed part of ongoing efforts to promote peace, reconciliation and national cohesion.
Hon. Nyuma told Parliament that the move was intended to strengthen unity and ensure that no citizen feels disadvantaged by the judicial process, emphasizing that the action reflects the spirit of the Agreement for National Unity and the country’s broader quest for lasting peace and stability.
Seconding the motion, Hon. Abdul Kargbo described the development as a historic moment for Sierra Leone and urged members of both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) to embrace reconciliation and mutual respect.
“We should not destroy ourselves because of political party differences,” Hon. Kargbo said, calling on politicians and supporters from across the political divide to work together in the national interest.
He urged Sierra Leoneans to break down political barriers, strengthen the bonds of national unity and place the country’s development above partisan considerations.
Also contributing to the debate, Hon. Daniel Koroma said the Attorney General acted within the framework of the law in discontinuing the treason case against the former President. He described the decision as a significant moment in Sierra Leone’s democratic journey and a step towards strengthening peace and national reconciliation.
The motion reflects Parliament’s support for the Attorney General’s decision, which Government officials have said is intended to advance national unity and foster a more inclusive political environment.
