Attorney-General Discontinues Treason Case Against Former President Ernest Bai Koroma

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has formally discontinued the criminal proceedings against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, bringing an end to the treason-related case that had been pending before the courts.

According to an official statement, the Attorney-General filed a notice of discontinuance in accordance with Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, exercising the constitutional and statutory powers vested in the office under the laws of Sierra Leone.

Former President Koroma had been facing charges of treason and misprision of treason in connection with the failed November 26, 2023 attempted coup. He was later granted bail on medical grounds to enable him to travel abroad for treatment.

With the filing of the notice of discontinuance, the case has been formally withdrawn and is no longer before the court. Consequently, the bail previously granted to the former President has automatically lapsed with immediate effect.

The Attorney-General’s decision means that Dr. Koroma is no longer subject to the criminal proceedings and is free to return to Sierra Leone upon completing his medical treatment abroad or at any time of his choosing.

The discontinuance marks a significant development in one of the country’s most closely watched legal and political cases.
