SLPP Leadership Holds Internal Discussions on Ernest Koroma’s Return from Exile

The leadership of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has confirmed that internal consultations have been held regarding developments surrounding the possible return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma from exile.

In a public notice dated 13 July 2026 and signed by the SLPP National Chairman, Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, the party disclosed that discussions were held with members of its National Elders Council on recent parliamentary and political developments relating to the former President.

According to the statement, the discussions emphasized the need for all parliamentary and governmental actions to be guided by the Constitution of Sierra Leone while safeguarding due process and promoting national unity, peace, and stability.

“Our discussions underscored the importance of ensuring that all parliamentary and governmental actions are guided by the Constitution of Sierra Leone while safeguarding due process and promoting national unity, peace and stability,” the statement reads.

Songa explained that the meeting also reaffirmed the SLPP’s commitment to democratic governance and national cohesion, noting that the party has a historic responsibility to uphold constitutional order and preserve peace.

He further stated that the deliberations took into account President Julius Maada Bio’s current role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with participants reflecting on the principles enshrined in the ECOWAS Revised Treaty and the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which promote constitutional governance and the peaceful resolution of political differences.

The SLPP National Chairman said he reiterated the importance of President Bio continuing to pursue peace, stability, and national cohesion through constitutional and democratic means.

According to the statement, the National Elders Council encouraged the National Chairman, the party’s National Executive, and SLPP members both at home and abroad to continue supporting President Bio’s efforts to promote peace, unity, and inclusive national dialogue for the benefit of all Sierra Leoneans.

The statement forms part of ongoing political consultations within the ruling party as national attention remains focused on developments concerning former President Ernest Bai Koroma.
