Kailahun Erupts as Alleged Police Assault Kills Bike Rider, Curfew Imposed

Authorities have imposed a curfew in Kailahun Township following violent clashes between police officers and commercial bike riders that left property damaged and heightened tensions across the district.
The curfew was announced on Tuesday night by the Resident Minister East, Mr. Gbessay Jusu Jaka Ngobeh, in consultation with security authorities in Kailahun, as efforts continue to restore calm and maintain public order. The restrictions will remain in force until further notice.
According to reports from Kailahun Town, the unrest was triggered by the death of a commercial bike rider who had reportedly traveled from Daru on a marriage-related trip. Witnesses alleged that the rider was struck with a stick by a police officer popularly known as “Blacker” during an encounter linked to the alleged possession of Tramadol.

The rider reportedly sustained serious injuries and later died, sparking outrage among fellow bike riders and residents.
News of the incident quickly spread throughout the town, leading to protests and confrontations between angry youths and law enforcement officers. The situation escalated into widespread unrest, resulting in the destruction of property, including the burning of police barracks.

Security personnel have since been deployed across key locations in Kailahun to prevent further violence and protect lives and property.
Authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement on the circumstances surrounding the rider’s death, while residents continue to call for a full and transparent investigation into the incident.
The government and local security officials have urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as efforts continue to restore peace in the district.
