Speaker Vows Not to Allow Presidential Powers to Be Undermined
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Thomas, has stated that he will not allow the powers and authority of the office of the President to be weakened.
Speaking on ongoing constitutional discussions, the Speaker said some people are advocating changes because they believe they may win future elections and occupy the presidency, adding that such moves could undermine the effectiveness of the office.
“As Speaker of Parliament, I will not sit here and allow the position of the President to be watered down,” Hon. Thomas said.
He emphasised that every nation requires a clear centre of authority, noting that “somebody has to be in charge of the nation” and that “somebody has to be the Supreme Executive Authority.”
The Speaker clarified that laws should not be made to favour any particular political party, but rather to serve the interests of any individual who occupies the presidency, regardless of their political affiliation.
“We are not making this law for any political party; we are making this law for any President that belongs to any political party,” he stated.
