Bio Exposes Cement Theft at Lungi International Conference Centre Site

By Kelvin Jay

President Julius Maada Bio has disclosed that a truckload of cement was recently stolen from the construction site of the ongoing Lungi International Conference Centre, expressing concern over the persistent theft of public property in the country.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Manowa Bridge in Kailahun District, the President said the incident occurred last week at what he described as one of the most significant infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Sierra Leone.

“Last week, a truckload of cement was stolen from the construction site of the Lungi International Conference Centre, one of the biggest facilities our country has ever attempted to build,” President Bio stated.

He lamented the recurring theft and vandalism of government assets, including infrastructure belonging to the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), noting that such acts undermine national development efforts.

The President used the occasion to call on citizens to take ownership of public projects and protect state resources intended to benefit all Sierra Leoneans.

Turning to politics, President Bio appealed to the people of Kailahun to continue supporting the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), which he said has consistently delivered meaningful development across the country.

“I am begging you to continue to remain under the shade of the SLPP. You have seen the benefits of that, so do not go into the hot burning sun,” he told residents, using a metaphor to encourage continued loyalty to the ruling party.

President Bio maintained that his administration is focused on delivering tangible development rather than what he termed “cosmetic projects,” pointing to the newly commissioned Manowa Bridge as evidence of the government’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens.

According to him, the bridge will enhance transportation, facilitate trade, boost agricultural activities, improve access to markets, and contribute to economic growth in the region.

He further noted that the project forms part of his government’s broader human capital development agenda, aimed at creating opportunities and improving living standards across Sierra Leone.

The commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, local authorities, community leaders and residents, many of whom welcomed the completion of the bridge and its expected contribution to the socio-economic development of Kailahun District.
