Bo Youth Escapes Death as Family Home Is Set Ablaze Amid Alleged Political Intimidation
A young man in Bo, Ahmed Sesay, reportedly narrowly escaped death after his family home at New Site was set ablaze in an incident the family believes was politically motivated.
According to accounts from family members and eyewitnesses, Ahmed was away playing football with friends when the incident occurred. The fire reportedly destroyed valuable household belongings, leaving the family facing significant losses.
Witnesses alleged that some of the perpetrators were heard expressing disappointment that they had failed to find Ahmed at home.
Ahmed’s father and other family members reportedly escaped through windows after the house became engulfed in thick smoke. Neighbours attempted to put out the fire but were unable to prevent extensive damage.
Residents said a group of youths had been seen moving around the area earlier in the day, creating fear and anxiety among locals. However, the identities and motives of those responsible for the fire have not been independently established.
The Sesay family has previously faced alleged political intimidation following the 2018 presidential election, when Ahmed’s father, Ibrahim Sesay, was reportedly a prominent supporter and youth leader for the then-opposition All People’s Congress (APC) in Bo.
The family claims that the political tensions continued for years, with Ibrahim Sesay allegedly subjected to threats and intimidation. He died in 2019 after suffering a heart attack, according to the family.
Months after his death, the family’s main source of livelihood—his wife’s shop in central Bo—was also reportedly destroyed by fire by unknown persons.
The repeated incidents eventually forced Ahmed, his mother and other family members to relocate to Freetown, where they sought safety after years of what they described as political intimidation and trauma.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about political intolerance and violence in parts of Sierra Leone, particularly where political differences have strained relationships within communities and even families.
The allegations surrounding the latest fire require investigation by the relevant authorities to establish the identities of those responsible and determine the motive behind the attack.
