Double Punishment for LAJ
… Imprisoned & Sacked as Peace Ambassador
By Kelvin Jay
For the past few days, the popular Sierra Leonean rapper, Amadu Bah, widely known as Boss LAJ, has faced what many describe as a double punishment—ranging from imprisonment to his dismissal as Peace Ambassador.
Since his appointment as Peace Ambassador, LAJ has frequently made headlines for controversial reasons. He was appointed by President Julius Maada Bio on February 12, 2024, following an earlier presidential pardon.
In late March or early April 2026, LAJ was arrested at the airport while reportedly attempting to leave the country in disguise. He was subsequently remanded at the Bo Correctional Facility.
He faced charges of cyberbullying and insulting conduct directed at the Mayor of Kenema City, Thomas Karimu Baio, stemming from an incident that occurred on March 21, 2026.
Following his time in custody—often described as being “returned to prison” in April—LAJ was relieved of his duties as Peace Ambassador in late April. Prior to his dismissal, the rapper publicly claimed that he had neither been paid nor provided with an office to effectively carry out his responsibilities.
Just hours before the announcement of his removal, LAJ released a video calling for peace and urging his supporters to refrain from engaging in violence on his behalf. He emphasized that peace is essential for attracting investors and fostering national development. Observers have suggested that his message appeared almost prophetic, as if he anticipated the decision that would soon follow.
Shortly thereafter, a State House notice confirmed his replacement by Abubakarr S. Turay, popularly known as Shady Baby.
In accepting his dismissal, LAJ expressed gratitude to President Bio for the opportunity to serve as the country’s first Peace Ambassador. He described the role as “an enriching and inspiring journey” that allowed him to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding efforts and promote national unity.
He further commended the President’s leadership for creating an environment where peace can thrive and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting national cohesion in any capacity. LAJ also congratulated his successor, expressing confidence in his ability to advance the peace agenda.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his removal, LAJ’s closing message struck a tone of appreciation, humility, and continued dedication to the pursuit of lasting peace in Sierra Leone.
