APC Aspirant Seeks PPRC Intervention Over Elections for Unopposed Positions

An aspirant in the ongoing internal elections of the All People’s Congress (APC) has formally requested the intervention of the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), raising concerns over the party’s decision to conduct elections for positions where candidates are unopposed.

In a letter addressed to the PPRC, the aspirant disclosed that he had earlier written to the APC’s Internal Elections Management Committee (IEMC) on 10 June 2026, requesting the issuance of a Practice Direction to clarify the treatment of uncontested positions during the party’s internal elections.

According to the letter, the aspirant argued that where only one candidate has been duly nominated at the close of nominations, there is no contest requiring an election. He maintained that this position is supported by the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991, and the Public Elections Act, 2022, both of which provide for the declaration of candidates elected unopposed.

The letter further states that the issues raised are based on established constitutional and statutory principles rather than personal opinion or political preference. The aspirant contends that conducting elections for uncontested positions would amount to an unnecessary exercise that is inconsistent with settled electoral law.

The aspirant is therefore calling on the PPRC to intervene and provide guidance to ensure that the APC’s internal electoral process complies with the country’s legal framework.
