PPRC Maintains Status Quo on APC Executive Pending Court Decision

The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has maintained the status quo regarding the leadership of the All People’s Congress (APC), pending the determination of a matter currently before the courts.
Pursuant to its constitutional and statutory mandate, the PPRC, on 13 February 2026, issued directives to the APC concerning the extension of the tenure of the party’s elected officials.
In its directive, the Commission extended the tenure of the APC Executive for a period of six months, in accordance with Section 39(5) of the Political Parties Act 2022, Act No. 25 of 2022.
The PPRC further directed that if the APC Executive failed to take the party to its National Delegates’ Conference upon the expiration of the six-month extension, the Leader of the APC in Parliament, together with five other Members of Parliament representing each region, would assume responsibility for managing the affairs of the party until the National Delegates’ Conference was held.
However, the Commission has now stated that a member of the APC has instituted legal proceedings against both the PPRC and the APC in relation to the second limb of the directive.
Consequently, the PPRC says it is constrained from implementing that aspect of its earlier directive until the court determines the matter.
The Commission has therefore clarified that the status quo will remain in effect pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
Accordingly, the current APC Executive will continue to manage and administer the affairs of the party until the court delivers its decision.
The PPRC’s latest position effectively puts on hold the proposed arrangement under which the APC Parliamentary Leader and five regional representatives would have taken over the management of the party following the expiration of the six-month extension.
The Commission said its decision is guided by the pending court action and the need to await the determination of the matter before taking further steps.
