Ministry Hands Over Suspect to CID After CCTV Captures Theft of Over US$20,000

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning has handed over one Mohamed Ansumana M. Dabeni to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following an alleged theft at the Ministry’s headquarters on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

The incident occurred at the Ministry’s reception area, where Dabeni was reportedly captured on CCTV taking a bag belonging to an Egyptian national. The bag allegedly contained more than US$20,000 in cash.

The theft was discovered after Dabeni had left the premises. However, a prompt review of the CCTV footage enabled Ministry officials to identify him, leading to his subsequent apprehension by Ministry staff.

He was later handed over to the police for further investigation.

According to the Ministry, Dabeni has confessed to the theft but has allegedly remained uncooperative in efforts to recover the missing money. He is currently in police custody as the CID continues its investigation.

The Ministry commended its staff for their vigilance and swift response, noting that the prompt review of surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending the suspect.

The Ministry further assured the public of its commitment to maintaining security and safeguarding the property of visitors and staff at its offices.
