Activist Presses PPRC To Sanction SLPP Over President Bio’s Controversial Bonthe Remarks

Civil society activist and human rights defender, Alphonso Gbandie, has described recent remarks by President Julius Maada Bio as “inciteful,” warning that such statements could heighten political tensions.
Gbandie, who serves as Executive Director of the Human Rights Defenders Network, criticized comments attributed to the President during a recent engagement in Bonthe, where he reportedly suggested that individuals supporting the All People’s Congress (APC) should “die early in the morning.”
Speaking in an interview on Truth Media, Gbandie rejected claims that the statement was made in jest. “If anyone says that was a joke, it wasn’t,” he asserted, emphasizing that such remarks from a sitting Head of State carry significant weight and implications.

While acknowledging his respect for the President, Gbandie described the comments as unfortunate and potentially dangerous, noting that they could incite hostility and deepen divisions within communities. He cautioned that statements from national leaders can influence public behavior, particularly in politically sensitive environments.

Drawing a parallel to past incidents of unrest, he referenced controversial messages circulated on social media by Adebayor, which were linked to violent disturbances in Makeni that resulted in loss of lives among both civilians and security personnel. He warned that rhetoric perceived as inflammatory could have similar consequences if not addressed.
Gbandie further questioned the appropriateness of a sitting President discouraging support for a legally recognized political party, stressing that the APC is a legitimate national entity and not a foreign group.
He called on the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) to take note of the remarks and ensure accountability, particularly from the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party.
The activist concluded by urging political leaders to exercise restraint in their public statements, especially as the country continues efforts to maintain peace and democratic stability.
