Death Toll Rises as 17 Sierra Leoneans Confirmed Dead in Conakry Landfill Disaster
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has confirmed the deaths of 17 Sierra Leonean nationals following the devastating Dar-es-Salam landfill landslide in Gbessia, Conakry, Guinea.
The confirmation followed a joint identification exercise conducted by Guinean authorities and officials of the Sierra Leone Embassy at designated hospital mortuaries in Conakry.
According to the Ministry, the deceased comprise 14 men and three women.
The Government of Guinea has so far confirmed a total of 34 fatalities from the disaster, while identification and recovery operations remain ongoing to verify outstanding cases and account for missing persons.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone Embassy has confirmed that 54 Sierra Leonean nationals survived the tragedy. The survivors include 32 women, 17 men and five minors.
The Ministry said the survivors have received immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, clothing and other essential supplies, while further consular and humanitarian needs are being assessed in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the Sierra Leonean community, with families anxiously awaiting further information about relatives who may have been affected by the disaster.
