With His Recent Outburst Over Flagbearer Succession… Is SLPP Chairman Blowing the Trumpet for Sengeh or Fatima Bio?
The recent remarks by the National Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Jimmy Batilo Songa, concerning the selection of the party’s next flagbearer have triggered controversy and intensified debate over succession within the ruling party.
Addressing SLPP Constituency Chairmen, Batilo Songa reportedly urged party members to wait for a directive from President Julius Maada Bio regarding the process of choosing the party’s next flagbearer.
According to the SLPP Chairman, the party’s Constitution gives President Bio, as Leader of the party, the authority to provide direction on the path the party should take, including matters relating to the selection of its next presidential candidate.
However, Batilo Songa’s statement has attracted internal pushback, particularly from the party’s National Secretary General, Umar Paran Tarawally, who has maintained that President Bio has repeatedly made it clear that the choice of the next SLPP flagbearer rests solely with the delegates.
The controversy has since generated intense speculation about which of the emerging flagbearer aspirants, if any, may benefit from Batilo Songa’s position.
Supporters of the Radical Inclusion Movement have reportedly welcomed and rallied around the Chairman’s statement, while supporters of other political camps, including the Ebema movement and supporters of Musa Tarawally, have strongly opposed it.
Those opposing Batilo Songa’s position have argued that President Bio has never communicated such a directive to the Chairman and have described the statement as misleading. Some critics believe the SLPP Chairman made a major political blunder by suggesting that the President would direct the party on who should become its next flagbearer.
The disagreement became more apparent during an interview aired on AYV, where SLPP National Secretary General Umar Paran Tarawally described Batilo Songa’s statement as an opinion that does not represent the official position of the party.
Tarawally said that, to his knowledge, President Bio had never made such a statement during meetings involving the party’s leadership. He maintained that the President has consistently emphasised the need for the party to follow a democratic process in selecting its next flagbearer.
President Julius Maada Bio has repeatedly stressed that the next flagbearer of the Sierra Leone People’s Party must emerge through a transparent and democratic process led by the party’s delegates, rather than through personal sentiment, individual endorsement or factional influence.
While discussions surrounding succession continue to gain momentum within the party, President Bio has also cautioned against premature flagbearer campaigns. He has insisted that the immediate focus of the SLPP should remain on governance and the delivery of development programmes to the people of Sierra Leone.
The President has further emphasised the importance of unity and grassroots appeal, with the party expected to eventually select a candidate capable of connecting with ordinary citizens and securing a mandate in the 2028 presidential election.
As the debate over succession continues to unfold, Batilo Songa’s recent remarks have raised a significant political question within the SLPP: Was the Chairman merely expressing his personal interpretation of the party’s constitutional leadership structure, or was he indirectly blowing the trumpet for a preferred successor?
With several names already being mentioned in connection with the party’s future leadership, political observers are now closely watching developments within the SLPP.
The question remains: Is Jimmy Batilo Songa blowing the trumpet for David Moinina Sengeh, Fatima Bio, or another emerging contender in the race to succeed President Julius Maada Bio?
