Youyi Building In Deplorable State, Sparks Concern Over Government Infrastructure

The condition of the iconic Youyi Building in Brookfields, Freetown, has once again come under public scrutiny, with concerns being raised about the state of the government complex that houses the majority of Sierra Leone’s ministries and civil service offices.

Highlighting the issue, the Head of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), Abdul Fatorma, shared photographs on social media exposing what he described as the deteriorating condition of the building.

According to Fatorma, the images depict parts of the Youyi Building, including the ceiling of the ninth floor and the frontage of the structure. The photographs reveal visible signs of wear and deterioration, raising questions about maintenance, safety, and the overall image of one of the country’s most important public buildings.

In his Facebook post, Fatorma wrote:

“This is the Youyi Building, a prominent multi-story government complex in Brookfields, Freetown, Sierra Leone, housing most ministries and civil service offices. The first image shows the 9th-floor ceiling; the other shows the frontage. As a taxpayer, are you satisfied with this building’s appearance, or do you have concerns?”

His remarks have sparked discussion among citizens, many of whom view the building as a symbol of public administration and governance. Critics argue that the deteriorating condition of such a key government facility reflects broader challenges relating to infrastructure maintenance and public sector investment.

As one of the most recognizable government buildings in Sierra Leone, the Youyi Building serves thousands of civil servants and members of the public daily. The concerns raised have renewed calls for urgent renovation and rehabilitation efforts to ensure the facility remains safe, functional, and representative of the institutions it houses.

The government has yet to publicly respond to the concerns highlighted in the post.
