The Director of External Relations of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Albert Massaquoi, has assured the public that the Commission remains fully prepared to conduct future elections, regardless of whether Parliament passes the proposed electoral law amendments.
Speaking in an interview with Truth Media, Massaquoi stated that the Commission continues to operate within the framework of the country’s existing electoral laws and is not dependent on the passage of new legislation to carry out its constitutional mandate.
According to him, while the proposed electoral amendments are still awaiting parliamentary approval, the current legal framework provides sufficient authority for the ECSL to organize and conduct elections.
“Whether Parliament passes new laws or not, we still have extant or existing laws to conduct elections,” Massaquoi stated.
He emphasized that the delay in passing the proposed electoral reforms has not affected the Commission’s level of preparedness in any way. He noted that ECSL continues to carry out its routine activities and preparations aimed at strengthening the country’s electoral process.
Massaquoi further disclosed that the Commission remains actively engaged with registered political parties and other key stakeholders as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure readiness for future electoral activities.
“Every day, ECSL is working and engaging existing political parties,” he said.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions surrounding proposed amendments to Sierra Leone’s electoral laws and growing public interest in the country’s electoral preparedness ahead of future elections.
The ECSL has consistently maintained that it remains committed to delivering credible, transparent, and democratic elections in accordance with the Constitution and the laws currently in force
