“Nobody Was Allowed to Support the SLPP Under the NPRC’’ – Former Chairman John Oponjo Benjamin

Former Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Chairman, John Oponjo Benjamin, has said that during the era of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), open support for the SLPP was prohibited, prompting party loyalists to establish the National Unity Party (NUP) as an alternative political platform.
Speaking on the country’s political history, Benjamin stated that the military administration did not permit individuals to openly identify with or support the SLPP.
“During our NPRC days, no one was allowed to support the SLPP openly, so we formed the NUP,” Benjamin said.
According to him, the formation of the NUP enabled supporters of the SLPP to remain politically engaged despite the restrictions that existed at the time.
Benjamin further described the NPRC as a government made up of people from different regions of Sierra Leone, noting that it was not aligned with any single political party.
His remarks offer historical perspective on the political environment under the NPRC administration and the measures adopted by SLPP supporters to sustain their political participation during that period.
