Bondo Society Has Affected Women’s Sexual Pleasure – Says Anti-FGM Advocate

By Kelvin Jay

Prominent anti-FGM advocate, Neneh Rugiatu Turay, has stated that the Bondo Society and the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) have negatively affected many women’s sexual pleasure and overall sexual health.

Speaking during a recent discussion, Turay questioned why society and cultural traditions should dictate women’s sexual experiences.

“What is wrong with women enjoying sex? Why should tradition control a woman’s sexual pleasure?” she asked.

According to her, many women who have undergone FGM experience pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse, often without fully understanding the cause of their condition.

“A lot of women are not sleeping with their partners because of pain they do not understand. Whenever their partners attempt intimacy, some complain of tiredness or discomfort, while others avoid sexual relations altogether,” she said.

Turay further revealed that, as part of her advocacy efforts, she provides counselling and support to women who have been affected by FGM. She noted that many women suffer from scars and other long-term complications resulting from the practice.

“Scars in women cause pain, and there are many women who continue to suffer the consequences of FGM long after the procedure has been carried out,” she added.

The anti-FGM campaigner reiterated her call for increased public awareness about the health implications of FGM, stressing the need to protect women and girls from practices that can have lasting physical, psychological, and sexual health effects.
