Muslims Can Register Multiple Marriages Under Sierra Leone Law – Acting Director of Marriage

By Kelvin Jay

The Acting Director of Marriage at the Office of the Administrator and Registrar General, Simithe Samura, has clarified that Muslims are legally permitted to register multiple marriages in accordance with Sierra Leone’s marriage laws.

Speaking during an interview on Truth Media’s Morning Devotion programme, Samura explained that Muslim men who are lawfully married to more than one wife can register each marriage with the Registry.

“If you are a Muslim and want to register four marriages, the Registry will register them all,” she said.

Samura noted, however, that when registering a subsequent marriage, the marriage certificate of the previous wife or wives must be attached as part of the registration process to ensure proper documentation and compliance with the law.

She also explained the procedures for civil marriages conducted at the Office of the Administrator and Registrar General. According to her, couples intending to contract a civil marriage must first undergo an oath-taking process, during which they meet with legal officers who explain the legal implications, rights and responsibilities associated with marriage before the ceremony is conducted.

Samura said the process is intended to ensure that both parties fully understand the legal commitment they are entering into before their marriage is formally solemnised and registered
