Former SLPP Flagbearer Says No Individual Currently Meets the Qualification Criteria to Contest for SLPP Flagbearer Position

Former SLPP flagbearer, Alpha Timbo, has stated that as things stand, no individual within the party currently meets the qualification criteria to contest for the flagbearer position.

According to him, the existing party executive is fully aware that the SLPP’s internal electoral process is guided by clearly defined rules, beginning from the lower-level elections up to the highest level of leadership selection. He stressed that several key structures and requirements must first be properly established before any credible flagbearer contest can take place.

“I can say as things stand, no individual is qualified to contest for the SLPP flagbearer position, as there are a lot of things to be put in place before choosing a leader of the party,” he stated.

Timbo further referenced provisions within the party’s constitutional framework, particularly Section 23(2), which addresses the transition from the repealed 1995 constitution. The section states that although the 1995 constitution has been repealed, all actions previously taken under its authority remain valid and effective, as if the constitution had not been repealed.

He explained that this provision underscores the need for continuity and adherence to established rules, especially in matters relating to leadership selection. Drawing from his own experience, Timbo recalled that prior to the previous elections involving the All People’s Congress, he had intended to contest under guidelines that included the five-year clause and other eligibility requirements. He noted that such provisions highlight the importance of a clear and consistent framework governing flagbearer elections.

The former flagbearer therefore called on the current leadership of the Sierra Leone People’s Party to take the necessary steps to ensure that all constitutional and procedural requirements are properly addressed before proceeding with any flagbearer selection process.
