U.S. Embassy Confirms Ambassador Hunt’s Resignation Citing Personal Reasons

The United States Embassy in Freetown has officially confirmed the resignation of Ambassador Bryan D. Hunt, who submitted his resignation to the White House, effective September 17, 2025. According to the Embassy, Ambassador Hunt’s decision is based on personal reasons, specifically family medical considerations, and he will not be returning to Sierra Leone.
Following his departure, Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey will continue to lead the U.S. Mission in Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Hunt served for two years in Sierra Leone, during which time he was widely recognized for his efforts in strengthening the U.S.–Sierra Leone partnership, focusing on key areas such as health, security, and economic prosperity.
In a message to U.S. Embassy staff, Ambassador Hunt expressed deep appreciation for his time in the country:
“I have loved every moment of my time in Sierra Leone and deeply admire the work you all do to advance the U.S.–Sierra Leone relationship.”
In a separate farewell message addressed to colleagues and friends, Ambassador Hunt elaborated on the reasons behind his sudden resignation:
“It is with a heavy heart that I wanted to share with you that I submitted my resignation as Ambassador to Sierra Leone earlier today to President Trump and will not be returning to Freetown.”
“This was not an easy decision, and a very unexpected one, as Haroon and I have loved every moment of our time with you and have an enduring admiration for the work that each of you do to advance the U.S.–Sierra Leone relationship.”
“That said, a number of personal factors, including my father’s unexpected triple bypass surgery last week, necessitate that I be closer to home in Virginia at this time.”
“I deeply regret that I will not be able to bid farewell to all of you in person, but rest assured that your work has been nothing short of inspirational. I am confident that under the leadership of Chargé Yancey and the rest of the mission’s outstanding Country Team, our important work to promote American security, safety, and economic prosperity will continue.”
Despite Ambassador Hunt’s early departure, the U.S. Embassy emphasized that the United States remains firmly committed to its relationship with Sierra Leone. Diplomatic efforts will continue under the leadership of Chargé d’Affaires Yancey, building on the strong foundation established during Ambassador Hunt’s tenure.
