SLPP Nominates Acting Mayor for Freetown Amid Boycott by Substantive Mayor

The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has moved to nominate an acting mayor for the Freetown Municipality following the reported boycott of governance by the substantive mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.

According to reports, approximately 20 SLPP councillors have selected one of their colleagues to serve in an acting capacity, pending the return of the elected mayor.

Confirming the development, SLPP Public Relations Officer Moses Mambu stated that the nominee will be formally presented to the party leadership and the government to oversee the operations of the council during the mayor’s absence.

The decision follows a recent meeting held at the party’s headquarters, convened by SLPP Chairman Jimmy Batilo Songa. The meeting brought together SLPP councillors, alongside key government officials including the Minister of Works, Denis Sandy, to deliberate on urgent service delivery issues—particularly the clearing of waste across the city.

During the engagement, Chairman Songa emphasized the need to avoid a leadership vacuum within the Freetown City Council and called on government stakeholders to support ongoing municipal operations. He also disclosed plans to engage the Vice President of Sierra Leone, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, to ensure coordinated intervention.

The move comes amid growing concerns over governance and service delivery in the capital, as political tensions continue to impact the functioning of the city council.
