Sierra Leoneans Trafficked and Abused in Cambodia

By Vos Staff Writer

Reports reaching Voice of Salone Newspaper have revealed harrowing accounts of Sierra Leonean nationals currently stranded in Cambodia, where they are allegedly being subjected to human trafficking, forced labour, torture, and inhumane treatment.

According to testimonies from survivors, the victims travelled to Cambodia after being promised legitimate typing and office jobs. However, upon arrival, they were reportedly forced to work against their will. Individuals who facilitated the travel allegedly sold the Sierra Leoneans to Chinese operators for approximately $5,000 per person.

Victims disclosed that they were held hostage and informed that anyone wishing to leave must pay a ransom of $7,000. Those unable to pay were allegedly locked up, beaten, electrocuted, and denied food, acts that clearly amount to kidnapping, human trafficking, and severe human rights abuses.

One survivor, whose identity is withheld for safety reasons, recounted a narrow escape:

“I only managed to escape because a woman who brought us water took pity on me and secretly helped me out of the room at night.”

The survivor revealed that many other Sierra Leoneans remain trapped, suffering daily abuse while being held until ransom is paid.

Even those who manage to escape face extreme hardship. According to the report, many landlords in Cambodia allegedly refuse to rent rooms to Black people, leaving escaped victims sleeping on the streets without food, shelter, or access to support services.

Through Voice of Salone Newspaper, the victims are making an urgent appeal to the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to intervene immediately and secure the safety and evacuation of its citizens.

“Time is critical. People are suffering and dying. We are begging our government to hear our cries and act now.”

The victims also called on human rights organizations, international partners, and the global community to help amplify their voices and bring international attention to their plight.
