Samura Kamara Commends APC Elected MPs …For their Absence in Parliament
Presidential Candidate of the All People’s Congress, Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara, has in a meeting held in the party regional headquarters in Makeni on Thursday 3rd August,2023, had expressed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the 53 elected APC Parliamentarians for holding on the fort and steadfastly supporting the Party’s decision to boycott all level of governance including the legislature.
The boycott was initiated in response to the controversial announcement of the June 24th General election results by the Elections Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).
In his address, Dr. Samura Kamara emphasized the party’s commitment to restoring democracy, rule of law, transparency, accountability, social justice, and constitutionality in Sierra Leone and urged the elected MPs to trust the process and stand united in pursuit of the party’s just cause.
“We have to believe in the party’s decision and we must therefore trust the process. We are fighting a good but just cause in the interest of the majority of the people of Sierra Leone so as to restore democracy, rule of law, transparency and accountability, social justice and constitutionality,” Kamara stressed.
Meanwhile, on Thursday 3rd August, marked the State Opening of the 6th Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone wherein President Julius Maada Bio outlined his plans and vision for the nation during the session.
However, notable absences among the Members of Parliament representing the main opposition APC party are observed, except for Mohamed Bangura, who defied his party’s stance.
The APC Parliamentarians’ absence is a direct consequence of the party’s decision to boycott government proceedings in protest against the election results. Disputes with the ECSL over the transparency and accuracy of the results following the June multi-tier elections had caused tensions within the APC party.
The elders of the party publicly announced their intention to continue the boycott until their demands were met, including the release of election results by polling centers. This marks the third consecutive parliamentary session that the APC MPs have chosen to boycott since the June 24 multi-tier elections. As the Parliament commences its sessions for the Second Republic, the situation remains tense as the opposition party stands firm in its demands.
