Diplomatic Negotiations Underway For Release of 16 Detained Officers

The Spokesman of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Hassan Sei Coomber, has confirmed that high-level diplomatic negotiations are ongoing to secure the unconditional release of the 16 Sierra Leonean security personnel currently detained by Guinea.
According to the spokesman, the personnel were apprehended in Keliyereh, Falaba District, and are presently being held at Guinea’s Defence Headquarters. He reassured the public that all 16 officers are safe and in stable condition despite remaining in detention.
Hassan Sei Coomber further disclosed that a fact-finding team — comprising local authorities and key community influencers — has been deployed to Kabala as part of broader efforts to de-escalate tensions along the border. The team is expected to support engagement initiatives aimed at easing the standoff and fostering dialogue with Guinean authorities.
He emphasized that the matter transcends defence and security engagement alone, noting that it will ultimately be resolved through diplomatic channels rather than military action. “This issue is not one that will be settled at the defence and security level; it requires diplomatic intervention,” he stated.
The RSLAF spokesman also made it clear that the detained personnel have not committed any crime. However, he noted that even in circumstances where allegations arise, there are established legal processes and procedures that must be followed in accordance with international norms and bilateral agreements.
Assuring the public of government commitment, he expressed confidence that the situation would be resolved as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, reports reaching this press indicate that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Kabba, has led a high-level delegation to engage his Guinean counterpart as part of intensified diplomatic efforts to secure the officers’ release and restore calm along the border.
