Deported Sierra Leoneans Claim Assault and Harassment by Guinean Security — Report

Reports reaching this medium indicate that more than 546 Sierra Leoneans recently deported from Guinea have alleged mistreatment at the hands of Guinean security forces.

According to accounts gathered through vox pop interviews conducted by journalists, several deportees claimed they were subjected to assault, harassment, and the confiscation of personal belongings. Some also alleged that teargas was used during the operation.

The deportees recounted that they were at their homes when Guinean soldiers reportedly rounded them up, forced them into vehicles, and transported them to Pamlap, a key border crossing point between Guinea and Sierra Leone. Many expressed shock at the manner in which they were removed from the country, noting that they had been engaged in legitimate livelihoods, including fishing, boat operations, and trading.

Several individuals further alleged that during the arrests, soldiers seized their phones, money, and other valuables, and that those who resisted were subjected to physical abuse.

Meanwhile, reports from Kambia District suggest that arrangements have been made by Sierra Leonean authorities to facilitate the safe transportation of the deportees from the border into the country.

Sources indicate that the deportation follows a recent tripartite agreement among regional stakeholders aimed at easing border tensions and strengthening security cooperation.

As of now, the Government of Sierra Leone has not issued an official statement regarding the allegations or the condition of the deportees.
