APC Rejects Blanket Responsibility in PPRC Fine

By Kelvin Jay

The Spokesman of the All People’s Congress (APC), Sidie Yayah Tunis, has stated unequivocally that the party will formally respond to the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) regarding the fine imposed on the APC over statements made during the party’s mammoth meeting at the Attouga Mini Stadium.

Speaking to the media, Tunis said the APC is prepared to take responsibility for statements made by its Secretary General at the meeting but will not accept responsibility for comments allegedly made by Zainab Sheriff.

“We have received a letter from the PPRC, and as a party we are engaging and will respond accordingly and appropriately,” Tunis said.

He stressed that political parties should be treated fairly by the PPRC, noting that during APC programs at the Attouga Mini Stadium, individuals are sometimes given the platform to speak. He explained that while a party may be held responsible where appropriate, this should not apply indiscriminately.

Tunis further explained that when the APC Secretary General made statements that raised concerns, he personally intervened and cautioned him, which led to an immediate change in tone.

“I personally went on stage to caution the Secretary General, which led him to change his tone. The party took action instantly, and the PPRC should take cognizance of that,” he said.

He also cautioned the PPRC against imposing what he described as a blanket fine, arguing that the Commission must first establish whether Zainab Sheriff is a registered member of the APC.

“PPRC should not fine the APC blanketly. Just because someone attends an APC mammoth meeting and makes random statements does not mean the APC should be held responsible,” Tunis emphasized.
