Women’s Organisation Calls for Release of Zainab Sheriff.

The Chairlady of the Wi Duty Organisation, Makiatu Ngomeh, has publicly appealed for the immediate release of their member, Zainab Sheriff, who is currently being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Freetown over allegations of incitement.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Ngomeh expressed deep concern and dissatisfaction over Sheriff’s arrest, describing the action as unnecessary and disproportionate. According to her, Sheriff is widely known for speaking her mind on social and political issues, and her recent comments should not warrant detention.

“She has always been vocal and expressive. That is who she is,” Ngomeh stated. “We do not see any justification for her arrest simply for exercising her right to freedom of expression.”

The women’s advocacy group emphasised that freedom of speech is a fundamental democratic right guaranteed under Sierra Leone’s Constitution, and urged authorities to uphold the principles of justice and fairness in handling the matter.

Ngomeh further called on the Government and law enforcement authorities to review the circumstances surrounding Sheriff’s detention and ensure that due process is followed. She appealed for calm among supporters while encouraging lawful engagement and dialogue.

As of press time, official details regarding the specific charges against Sheriff have not been fully disclosed, though sources confirm she remains in custody pending further investigation.

The case has sparked debate on social media and among civil society groups, with growing calls for transparency and respect for civil liberties.
