With funding from the Embassy of Ireland, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Action Against Hunger (ACF) officially launched two major programmes on Thursday, 28th August 2025, at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. The initiatives—Nutrition-Sensitive Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Programme (NuCAMPS) and the LIFE Consortium Programme—are designed to tackle food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate change across Sierra Leone.
The €8 million initiative will be implemented over four years by WHH and ACF in collaboration with local partners. Its overarching goal is to strengthen resilience in vulnerable communities by promoting climate-smart agriculture, improved nutrition, access to clean energy, and sustainable livelihoods.
At the launch event, government officials and development partners pledged strong collaboration to ensure these programmes achieve lasting impact for households most affected by food insecurity and climate shocks.
Speaking at the event, WHH Country Director Emmanuel Octave Bananeza highlighted the transformative potential of the two consortium-led projects. He explained that the LIFE Consortium is focused on enhancing food and nutrition outcomes for vulnerable families through increased climate resilience, financial inclusion, and access to clean energy. Simultaneously, NuCAMPS emphasizes nutrition-sensitive approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
“This event not only marks the beginning of these transformative programmes, but also reaffirms our shared commitment to building healthier, climate-resilient communities,” Bananeza stated.
He extended sincere appreciation to the Embassy of Ireland for its steadfast support, and to the Government of Sierra Leone for enabling WHH and its partners to contribute meaningfully to national development goals.
WHH will lead the implementation of the LIFE Consortium Programme in partnership with several organizations, including Concern Worldwide, Raqqa, Qaeda, Aida, Human Resource Development, Safe Capital, Major Industry, Forestry, and Women in the Military. The programme will operate in Kenema and Tonkolili districts, engaging directly with communities to boost nutrition and food security, advance climate-smart agriculture, expand renewable energy access, improve water services, and promote financial inclusion—particularly for women and youth.
In parallel, the NuCAMPS Programme, led by Action Against Hunger, will roll out complementary interventions in Bo, Moyamba, and Pujehun districts. Together, the two programmes will reach 310 communities across six districts, illustrating their broad geographic scope and ambition.
Representing Action Against Hunger, Admire Mukorera, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders present—including government ministries, civil society organizations, development partners, and the media—emphasizing that the launch was more than a formal event; it was a collective call to action.
She elaborated on the goals of the programmes and underscored the critical importance of partnership, inclusivity, and alignment with national strategies to ensure success.
“This is about building systems, skills, and solutions that communities can own and sustain,” Mukorera noted.
She concluded with a strong message of collaboration and hope:
“Let us remember this day not just as the launch of two programmes, but as a renewal of our shared commitment to a resilient, nourished, and empowered future for all.”
