Voice of Salone Newspaper stormed the street of Freetown to gather firsthand information about why many young girls are engaging in Commercial Sex Trade.
During a vox pop where we sampled the opinions of various Commercial Sex Workers in Freetown, many say that they embark on Prostitution because they are struggling with serious relationship.
“Some of us are struggling with serious Relationships… We’re tired with Fake relationships. Hence, we are into Prostitution”, said a handful of Commercial Sex Workers who spoke to this press, while pledging their commitments to abandon the trade if they have serious man that could take care of their needs.
Zainab Kamara (not her real name) explained that she has been in the Prostitution for over 7 years now, and it is in this trade that she generates revenue to take care of her families.
“I am single mother with Four Children. It is through Prostitution that I am able to take care of my kids as their father has parted ways with me for so long”, says Zainab, while asserting by pledging his commitment to exit this trade if she gets the required financial support to take care of her kids.
Hawanatu Bangura ( not her real name), a popular Commercial Sex Worker at Texaco, said she finds pleasure in Prostitution, noting how it is through this business that she pays her house rent and taking care of her mother. “It is through this prostitute trade that I am able to pay my house rent and taking care of my mother”, said Hawanatu.
Majority of Commercial Sex Workers interviewed by this Newspaper explained their stories that led them into Prostitution. Some say they are in the trade for quick returns, while others say they are in the trade to take care of their families.
When asked what influenced many of them into Prostitute life, many asserted that they were influenced by peer groups, while other school of thoughts are shifting the goal post to their poor family background as being responsible to that.
