The Story of Sidie Kakay: A Cry for Justice and Safety
By Sulaiman T Jalloh
In Sierra Leone, a nation where tradition and modernity often clash, a brave man named Sidie Kakay—a father, an orphanage home manager, and social worker—has emerged as a symbol of resilience in the face of unspeakable terror. For over a decade, Sidie dedicated his life to helping orphaned children in Sierra Leone, working tirelessly to provide them with love, care, and hope for a better future. But today, he lives in fear, his life turned upside down by the actions of a powerful traditional group known as the Poro Society.
Sidie had worked at the orphanage in Lungi, Kafu Bullom Chiefdom, Port Loko District, for many years. The orphanage was close to a sacred area of the Poro Society. Over time, Sidie began facing threats from members of the society, who resented his refusal to comply with their demands. Despite these dangers, Sidie remained committed to protecting the children who had no one else to turn to.
In March 2023, the threats culminated in violence. Men came to the orphanage, dragged Sidie into the bush, and beat him badly. They forced him into a ritual he didn’t want to take part in. That night, Sidie lost more than his health—he lost his peace, his dignity, and his sense of safety.
The attack left him with a damaged left eye, and he had to travel to Germany for surgery. Even after returning, the threats didn’t stop. The Poro Society continued to demand the boys, and Sidie’s family lived in constant fear.
Sidie reported the attacks to the police, but the authorities were powerless against the society’s influence. Unable to ensure the safety of the children or his family, Sidie was forced to leave his job and abandon his home.
Today, Sidie Kakay is pleading for help—a chance to live without fearing for his life every day. He is calling on the public, the security council, and the inter-religious community to protect him and his family from the ongoing intimidation and threats by this secret society.
Sidie’s story is a powerful cry for justice and safety. He has suffered for standing up to protect the innocent, and his bravery deserves recognition. Let his story remind us of those who risk everything for what is right. Let it reach someone who can help.
