Survey Reveals Inmates Selling Fish, Pepper and Other Food Items at Pademba Road Prison

By James Johnson

The Head of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHDRI), Abdul Fatorma, has disclosed findings from a recent survey conducted at Pademba Road Prison, revealing that some inmates are engaged in the sale of food items within the correctional facility.

Speaking on the outcome of the survey, Fatorma explained that the research team observed inmates selling items such as fish, pepper, palm oil, and other cooking condiments inside the prison.

“During our survey at Pademba Road Prison, we saw inmates selling fish, pepper, palm oil and other food items,” he stated.

Fatorma noted that the survey involved collecting firsthand information from both inmates and correctional officers at the facility. According to him, the engagement provided insights into the day-to-day realities within the prison environment.

He further revealed that the team also observed some inmates smoking cigarettes within the prison, a situation he said raised concerns that require attention from authorities.

The CHDRI head clarified that the survey was strictly observational and research-based, emphasizing that the team did not collect personal details from inmates during the process. Instead, the exercise focused on information already recorded within the correctional facility and general conditions observed during the visit.

Fatorma explained that the aim of the survey was to better understand living conditions and internal activities within the prison, which could help inform discussions on correctional reforms and the welfare of inmates.

The findings have since sparked conversation among observers about the internal economy that sometimes develops within correctional facilities, where inmates engage in small-scale trading of food items and other essentials to support their daily needs.
