SLPP Stalwart Exposes Hidden Truth Behind Former ECSL Boss Resignation

By Kelvin Jay
A staunch member of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and former NPRC strongman, Kwegor Amara, has alleged that former Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) Chief Commissioner Mohamed Konneh was compelled by external pressures to act against his conscience, a situation he said ultimately led to Konneh’s resignation.
According to Amara, the former ECSL boss voluntarily stepped down because he grew weary of persistent demands to “do the wrong thing.”
“Mohamed Konneh resigned because he was tired of people constantly telling him to act against what was right,” Amara asserted.
Amara made these remarks while expressing deep dissatisfaction over what he described as the long-standing marginalisation of the Eastern Region within the SLPP, despite the region’s historical role as the party’s strongest electoral base.
He argued that the Eastern Region has consistently delivered massive electoral support to the SLPP but has been systematically sidelined when it comes to key leadership positions within the party.
Describing the region as the “jumbo basket of the SLPP,” Amara called on the party’s hierarchy to address what he termed the wrongs of the past by ensuring fairness, inclusivity, and recognition of loyal strongholds.
Looking ahead to the 2028 general elections, Amara urged the SLPP to elect a matured, battle-tested, and politically experienced leader from the Eastern Region, warning that failure to do so could undermine the party’s chances of retaining the presidency.
He stressed that correcting internal imbalances and rewarding loyalty would not only strengthen party unity but also position the SLPP for electoral victory in 2028.
