SLPP Power-Sharing Strategy: A Move To Make Sierra Leone a One-Party State — APC Secretary General

By Kelvin Jay

The Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), Lansana Dumbuya, has strongly criticized the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) over what he described as a covert attempt to transform Sierra Leone into a one-party state through its power-sharing strategy.

Speaking during a recent press briefing, Dumbuya described the SLPP’s push to extend the Proportional Representation (PR) system to the executive arm of government as a calculated ploy to suppress opposition voices and dismantle multiparty democracy in the country.

“We in the APC say NO to the PR system. The President is using this so-called power-sharing strategy to hide his true intentions. The majority of Sierra Leoneans have expressed their preference for the First-Past-The-Post system to be used in the next elections,” Dumbuya declared.

He questioned the sincerity of the SLPP, pointing out that if the government genuinely believed in power sharing, it would have introduced the system when it first assumed office in 2018. Instead, he accused the ruling party of using it now as a “political witchcraft game to rig the upcoming elections.”

Dumbuya concluded by calling on citizens and democratic stakeholders to stand firm and amplify support for Resolution 78 of the Tripartite Committee recommendations, which he believes holds the key to ensuring electoral transparency and preserving the integrity of Sierra Leone’s democracy.
