Sierra Leone Police to Enforce Helmet and Seatbelt Regulations Nationwide

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has announced that it will intensify the enforcement of road safety regulations effective Monday, 9th March 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and reduce road traffic fatalities across the country.

According to the notice, the enforcement exercise will focus on the mandatory wearing of crash helmets by all motorbike riders and their passengers, as well as the compulsory use of seatbelts by all front-seat occupants in moving motor vehicles.

The Police further disclosed that from 1st to 7th March 2026, officers will conduct a nationwide public education and awareness campaign. During this initial phase, emphasis will be placed on sensitization, issuing reminders to motorists, riders, and passengers, and giving verbal warnings to individuals found in violation of the regulations.

The primary objective of the awareness phase is to promote voluntary compliance and reinforce the life-saving importance of wearing crash helmets and seatbelts at all times while on the road.

However, beginning 9th March 2026, full enforcement will take effect. The Police have warned that anyone found violating these road safety regulations will be arrested and may be fined or charged to court in accordance with the law.

The notice serves as an official warning to the general public. All road users are strongly urged to comply with the regulations, as failure to do so will attract the full force of the law
