At a Press briefing held on Thursday 20th July, 2023 at the Company headquarters at Wellington industrial estate, the management of the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited has called on all Farmers to grow more sorghums which will help to expand the production capacity of the brewery products and to meet the demands of their consumers.
“Brewery is using sorghums which is a local material planted in Sierra Leone to produce our beverages… The demand of Sorghum has increased and this is why we are calling on all farmers to embark on Sorghum farming”, said the Corporate Affairs Manager, Foday Daboh.
He explained the life support the company has been given to farmers who are embarking on Sorghum farming which include: provision of the raw seeds, transportation facilities and provision of packaging bags as a way to empower the farmers in their farming activities.
He also said that the company has been assisting the farmers with agronomists who has been providing the expertise to teach the farmers on how to plant and harvest the sorghums.
“We are providing all of these opportunities to empower the farmers to grow more sorghums”, he said, and also cited the advance payment the company has been given to their farmers based on an agreed payment plan. The payment model, he said, are done in accordance with the contractual agreement between the company and the farmers.
“We are doing all these to encourage the farmers to grow more sorghums and continue to do business with us”, he maintained, intimating that since the inception of this farming, many farmers have become successful in this business.
He further disclosed that Initially the company started off with small number of farmers, but today they are boasting of having over 25,000 farmers that are embarking on sorghum farming.
Even though the company is working with these numbers, but yet they are still not being able to provide the sorghums needed for the production, he said, and hence the reason they are calling on all farmers to embark on sorghum farming to meet their demands for sorghum for the production of their goods.
“When we have more farmers that embark on sorghum farming, Brewery will expand its production capacity to meet the demand and supply”, he added.
Project Manager of Sorghum, Christian Mambu, explained the successes of the project which has helped to change the lives of our local farmers. “Since the inception of sorghum farming in Sierra Leone, many farmers have benefited alot and their lives have changed.
Some have even built houses in this business and some have been able to do a lot of good things for their lives”, he said, and encouraged all farmers to embark on sorghum farming which will help to benefit their lives.
