PPRC Calls for Speedy Investigation
The Political Parties Registration Commission has in a letter written to the Inspector General of Police dated 23rd February, 2023 called on the IGP to investigate the physical attack on APC Supporters/Members allegedly by Security personnel. “I am writing in relations to claims of physical attacks on members of the All People’s Congress allegedly by security personnel that are bound on social media and to register the commission’s concern respecting those claims, the PPRC Chairman Abdulai Bangurah stated in the letter sent to the Inspector General of Police.
He furthered that whilst the Commission is continued to urge social media platforms to produce footages of the alleged attack; they are at the same time urging the Police to speedily investigate the aforesaid claims and appropriate action be taken against the perpetrators if substantiated.
In another letter dated 23rd February, the Political Parties Registration Commission issued a fine of NLe120,000 to the All People’s congress party for breaching section 39(1)(c&d) of the PPRC Act. The PPRC says after issuing a warning letter to the APC to desist from peddling public insults and provocation against its opponent, but unfortunately the party did not heed to warning as their supporters on the 20th February, 2023 in the presence of its national leader elect and the Flagbearer designate Dr.Samura Kamara, again hauled public insults and provocation songs against His Excellency Julius Maada Bio and his wife, Fatima Bio. They said the APC party’s conduct in the forgoing behal , is therefore in deliberate contravention of the said section 39(1)(c&d) of the Political Parties Act 2022, adding that the persistent infringement of that provision in the Act by the APC party is extremely concerning to the Commission, as it not only a recipe for confrontation and breach of peace, but it also corrupts public morals.
The PPRC Chairman says in light of the foregoing and in pursuance of section 39(2)(b) of the Political Parties Act 2022 and without prejudice to section 39(3&4) of same, that provides for further actions under the general law by the affected persons and the right of the party to appeal respectively, the APC is hereby fined the sum of NLe120,000,000 and insisted that the fine be paid within two weeks from the date herein and furnish the commission with evidence of such payment.
