Chairman of the Special Select Committee on Fake Degree, Hon. Kandeh Yumkella, has disclosed in Parliament that one Year has passed by and the Police is still dragging its feet to conclude the investigation and Prosecute the three fake Universities to Court (namely Dominion University, African Graduate University and Professional Graduate Technical Institute) who have been accused of awarding Fake Degrees to SierraLeoneans.

“The delay of the Police to Prosecute these three fake Universities have shown that as a nation we are not really serious in the fight against Fake Degree”, the Chairman of the Fake Degree Committee told Members of Parliament while presenting a comprehensive report on the investigation of fake degree in SierraLeone.

He continued by intimating that even the Dominion University case wherein people were seen under a mango tree awarding Fake degree is a clear case for the Police to do the needful and prosecute the matter, but said that has never happened up to date.

It is said that when the scandals of Fake degree broke out, the Police was quick to intervene and arrested the Proprietors of these fake Universities, but said after that arrest; the CID is yet to conclude their investigation and prosecute the matter as it is still under their carpet.

The Chairman also intimated that based on interview he had with DPP, it came out glaringly that the matter is still not being prosecuted and thereby expressing his frustration on how the Police is treating the case with levity.

“There is still zero prosecution on the matter brought against these three fake Universities”, he added.

On the issue of Compliance with the Investigation by the Special Select Committee, Hon. Kandeh Yumkella, noted that based on record shown by the Public Service Commission, out of 18,000 Government employees, only 1,300 submitted their certificates for Verification, thereby leaving a balance of 16,700 workers unverified.

He also spoke about the fees involved in verifying the Certificates of those submitted their academic credential for verification, which according to him, is within $10 and above, further intimating that because of the unavailability of funds, the Committee is constrained to carry out their work.

He concluded by urging Government to put the necessary modalities to audit all officials in all Ministries, Department and Agencies.
