Newspaper Editors Decide on Saturday… Thomas Dixon Elected as Chairperson of Guild

The Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Guild of Newspaper Editors Sierra Leone has on Saturday April 19, 2025 officially declared the results of the recently concluded 2025 executive elections, which saw six candidates vying for various leadership positions, with four running unopposed.

According to the Commissioner’s statement, the positions of Assistant Secretary General and Organizing Secretary received no nominations and therefore remained uncontested. Out of the 79 registered members of the Guild, 14 applied for proxy voting, and 13 successfully submitted their ballots on time.

The Guild recorded a high voter turnout, with 73 members participating in the election, translating to a 92.4 percent participation rate, including proxy votes.

In the hotly contested race for Chairperson, Thomas Dixon emerged victorious. He secured a total of 44 votes—8 via proxy and 36 in person—defeating Elias Bangura, who garnered a total of 29 votes (5 by proxy and 24 in person).

By the authority vested in him, the Chief Electoral Commissioner officially declared the following individuals elected to serve in the Guild’s leadership:
• Thomas Dixon – Chairperson
• Abu Kalokoh – Vice Chairperson
• Ishmael Saidu Kanu – Secretary General
• Alusine Sesay – Financial Secretary
• Komba Fillie – Public Affairs Secretary

The Commissioner expressed appreciation to his team for their commitment and support throughout the electoral process. “I wish to thank my team, including Christian Conteh and Samuel Jeremiah Kargbo, both members of the Committee, for their support in the process,” he said.

He concluded by thanking Guild members for the trust reposed in the Commission to deliver a transparent and credible election. ‎<This message was edited>
