Labour Congress Backs Teachers’ Strike, Urges Government to Act Swiftly

By VOS Writer
The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) acknowledges the ongoing strike action undertaken by one of its affiliates, the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU), which commenced 8th September 2025. This industrial action stems from unresolved issues raised with the Government of Sierra Leone since November 2024.
The SLLC is aware of continued engagements between the Government and the SLTU aimed at resolving these concerns and suspending the ongoing strike. However, we are deeply concerned that the Government has yet to adequately address the critical and mandatory issues highlighted by the SLTU—particularly at a time when the Free Quality Education initiative remains the Government’s flagship programme.
In light of the current circumstances, the Sierra Leone Labour Congress calls on the Government to urgently respond to the SLTU’s demands to ensure the immediate resumption of schools and the uninterrupted promotion of quality education for our nation’s children.
The SLLC hereby extends its solidarity and support to the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union during this challenging time. They reaffirmed commitment to engaging with both the Government and the SLTU to explore all options toward a swift and just resolution of the teachers’ grievances.
