In July 2025, a mysterious yacht identified as Agios Bessetere washed ashore at Hamilton Beach 1, in the western area of Freetown, sparking widespread speculation among residents. The unusual grounding of the vessel led many to fear it was linked to drug trafficking. A joint security response immediately followed involving the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) Navy and the Sierra Leone Police Maritime Wing.
Although initial public suspicion centered around possible cocaine trafficking, security officials later announced that they found no items of police or national security interest on board. In a press release dated 22nd July 2025, police explained that the yacht appeared to have drifted due to engine failure.
The Sierra Leone Police, through spokesperson Brima El Turay Kamara, further confirmed that three crew members were placed under monitoring as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities assured the public that they would provide updates as the inquiry progressed.
However, nearly four months have passed since the incident, and there has been no official update regarding the status of the investigation, the crew, the vessel’s origin, or why the yacht was reportedly flying the Sierra Leone flag. Despite attempts by this press to obtain clarification, police have not yet provided new information.
This prolonged silence has prompted questions among members of the public, with some calling for transparency and accountability regarding the case. They are urging the police to provide an update to dispel speculation and maintain public confidence in ongoing security and anti-drug-trafficking operations.
For now, the fate of the Agios Bessetere investigation remains unclear, leaving many wondering whether progress has been made or if the matter has simply gone quiet.
