Guinea Announces Troops Withdrawal From SierraLeone & Liberia Borders After Mano River Union Summit in Conakry

Guinea has announced plans to gradually withdraw its troops from border areas with Sierra Leone and Liberia following a high-level diplomatic engagement among leaders of the Mano River Union in Conakry.

The meeting, held at Mohamed V Place in Conakry, brought together regional leaders including President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, President Joseph Boakai of Liberia, and Guinea’s leader Mamady Doumbouya to address recent border tensions and strengthen cooperation among the three neighboring countries.

In a statement dated 16 March 2026, the General Staff of the Guinean Armed Forces announced that the decision followed agreements reached during the Summit of Heads of State of the Mano River Union held in Conakry.

According to the statement issued by Guinea’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, the leaders resolved to resolve border disputes between the three countries through diplomatic channels and to strengthen interstate cooperation aimed at maintaining security and building trust among neighboring populations with shared history, geography and culture.

The General Staff also expressed appreciation to the people of Guinea for their patriotism and calm during the period of heightened tensions. It further commended the country’s Defense and Security Forces for demonstrating professionalism, restraint and vigilance while carrying out their responsibilities to safeguard national sovereignty.

Reaffirming Guinea’s commitment to defending its territorial integrity, the military leadership stated that the armed forces remain ready to protect every portion of the country’s territory.

However, in line with the agreements reached at the summit, the General Staff announced the gradual reduction of defense deployments along Guinea’s borders, beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

The statement concluded with a call for citizens to remain vigilant and to continue supporting peace, dialogue and cooperation initiatives among the brotherly nations of the Mano River Union.
