Guild of Editors Condemns Physical Assault on Editor Prince Kamara

The Umbrella body for all Newspaper Editors in Sierra Leone known as Guild of Editors, has condemned Physical assault on Prince Kamara, Editor of Open Space Newspaper, who was alleged to have seriously beaten by SLBC Staff members while he was carrying out investigation about the institution’s strike action.
Explaining about the incident, Prince Kamara stated that he visited the SLBC premises to verify reports of an ongoing strike when he was identified as the author of a recent critical articles. During that period, Prince was attacked by dozen individuals who rushed at him, and subjected him to merciless beaten. Prince sustained injury in his head and bodily pain during the course of the assault before being forcibly removed from the compound.
Upon receiving the report, Guild of Editors release a press release on Wednesday, May 7,2025, describing the incident as gross violation of journalistic freedom and a direct breach of Mr. Kamara’s constitutional and legal rights. It further views the assault as a dangerous precedent for freedom of Expression and journalist safety in the country.
“The media that is always probing and giving opinions of others should be more tolerable when the beam light is turned on itself,” said Thomas Josephus Dixon, Chairman of the Guild. “Media gangsterism should not be encouraged. We are trained to use our pens and mic intelligently. Let us reject media gangsterism.”
The Guild calls on the SLBC leadership to conduct a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation into the incident and ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable.
While standing in solidarity with Price Kamara, the Organization also urges all media institutions across the country to uphold the rule of law, professionalism, and tolerance, even in the face of criticism.
