Gov’t Releases 37 APC Political Prisoners Under National Unity Agreement

By Suliaman T Jalloh

The Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has confirmed the release of 37 individuals affiliated with the All People’s Congress (APC), marking a major milestone in Sierra Leone’s ongoing peace and reconciliation process.

Attorney-General Alpha Sesay said the decision followed a list submitted by the APC, with all individuals found not to be subjects of any ongoing criminal investigations. In line with the Agreement for National Unity, signed on 18 October 2023, and in accordance with the Tripartite Committee’s recommendations, they are now free to resume their normal activities without restriction.

The move has been widely welcomed as a tangible step towards national cohesion, political dialogue, and the healing of long-standing divisions. Supporters describe it as a bold gesture of compromise that could pave the way for further trust-building between Sierra Leone’s main political forces.

“This is more than just a release of individuals — it’s a release of tension,” one political observer noted. “It shows a willingness to put the country’s future ahead of partisan interests.”

As the process unfolds, optimism is growing among Sierra Leoneans both at home and abroad that such measures will help secure lasting peace, political stability, and a brighter future for the nation. While the journey toward unity continues, today’s decision stands as a significant milestone on that path.
