Division Deepens among lawyers as… Another Parallel Bar Association is Formed
A group of dissatisfied lawyers have come together to establish a new group known as the Law Society of SierraLeone. The rationale behind this new association was as a result of the ulgly incident occured in the recently held Bar Association election which surrounded around lack of transparency and electoral fraud.
The new organization was launched by prominent legal professionals including Yada Williams, Durcil Taylor, who expressed their dismay with what happened in the recently held Bar Association election which they termed as a “disgrace and embarrassment” to the legal field.
To restore sanctity in the Bar, senior lawyers have called for a fresh election, but it seems like their calls are yet to yield any dividend, which has now prompted the establishment of a parallel Bar Association that is supported by senior members in the legal profession. This new group, according to sources, is aimed at promoting equal rights and justice and desires to address injustices and state capture by the current regime.
In respond to the new organization, the Executive of the Sierra Leone Bar Association distanced themselves from the formation of the Law Society and stated that there is only Bar Association that is recognized in SierraLeone.
