Samura Kamara Survives Assassination Attempt

The APC Presidential Candidate, Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara, was under siege on Monday as he went through a harrowing death experience at the hands of armed Police officers attached at the Mile 38 Checkpoint.

Eyewitnesses told Voice of Salone Newspaper that the standoff between the APC Supporters and armed Police and army guards at Mile 38 on Monday would have escalated to something else had it not been for the intervention of the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu.

According to eyewitnesses, the problem started when the police officers blocked the convoy of APC Presidential Candidate, Dr. Samura Kamara, on the basis that there were too many vehicles in his convoy and in order for him to proceed to Freetown he should reduce the number of vehicles in his entourage.

As a result, a disagreement ensued between the Police and the APC Supporters resulting the former to go on the rampage and fire teargas at the vehicle tires of the opposition leader thereby putting him under siege.

Video footages seen by this press also show how dozens of teargas canisters were thrown at Opposition supporters.

The SierraLeone Police in their press release dated 2nd April, 2023 informs that the general public that the deadlock occurred at Mile 38 Checkpoint as a result of the refusal of APC leader to adhere to the regulations that there should be a ten vehicle in his convoy when he left Lungi for Freetown.   “ The Leadership of the SierraLeone Police Wishes to inform the general public that  on today’s date(2/04/2023), Dr Samura Kamara left lungi with a ten vehicle convoy, whilst the SLP provided security coverage. The number of vehicles on his convoy kept increasing along the way. By the time the convoy reached Mile 38 Checkpoint, the vehicles on the convoy were over fifty and the Police had to halt their movements with the view to engage the team in respect of the gentleman’s agreement”, the SLP Public notice revealed, adding that whilst the Police insisted that the gentleman’s agreement must be adhered to, Dr Samura Kamara, and team, on the other hand, defiantly told the Police that they must allow the vehicles on the convoy to pass through the checkpoint to Freetown. “Some of the Overzealous supporters in the convoy even removed shirts and physically confronted the Police.  Social Media is awash with such videos. At this point the police had to disperse the crowd to restore law and order and reopen the route to normal traffic”, the public notice reads.

The APC, in their press release, expressed their deep concerned over what they described as heightened intolerance demonstrated by the SLPP Government of President Julius Maada Bio and its increasing use of state institutions, particularly the Police, Military against their party, its leadership and supporters.

The APC believes that what happened at Mile 38 Checkpoint was an assassination attempt, which could have gone terribly wrong if it were not for the peaceful nature of their leader and his patriotic and mature handling of the unfortunate and irresponsible behaviour of the police. “Such reckless behaviour by some sections of the state security, acting on political orders, constitute a threat to peace and security”, the APC Press release notes.
Meanwhile, After an hours of deadlock between the armed guards and the APC Supporters, the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, arrived at the scene and succeeded in calming down the situation.

The Police Chief gave a safe passage to Dr. Samura Kamara and his entourage to proceed to Freetown and averted the chaotic situation.
